After four albums of not much variation in sound, something like this was bound to happen sooner or later. Sure, it doesn't change too much but it's enough to distinguish it from their previous material easily. Moments like 'Partners In Crime' and 'One Way Trigger' certainly are better than others, and while there's nothing bad, it's not all of that consistency that is so idiosyncratic with The Strokes. Additionally, it's lacking a standout along the lines of 'Reptilia', 'Last Nite', 'Juicebox' or even 'Under Cover of Darkness'. It's cool and it deserves attention, but I wouldn't go as far as to suggest it's better than any of their previous four. 4.25*

It's not crazily different to what I've heard from them before but there's quite a bit here to provide an interesting point of difference. It doesn't always work for me as well as their more traditional sound has, but this is a generally cool and enjoyable album.
