Leslie West († December 23 2020)

Leslie West, (October 22, 1945 – December 23, 2020) of West, Bruce and Laing, The Vagrants, whose band Mountain helped lay the groundwork for heavy metal with fuzzy, hard-riffing songs like the cowbell-enhanced “Mississippi Queen,” died Wednesday at a hospital in Palm Coast, Florida. He was 75.

The cause of death was cardiac arrest. On Monday, West was rushed to a hospital after suffering cardiac arrest at his home near Daytona, Florida, where he never regained consciousness.

Born Leslie Weinstein on October 22, 1945, West began his musical career with Long Island rock ’n’ soul band The Vagrants, but was best known for his work with Mountain, the band he founded with bassist/vocalist Felix Pappalardi.
